On Thursday 22 July 11AM CEST you are invited to attend a webinar marking the publication of a new Statelessness Index briefing on deprivation of nationality and the prevention of statelessness. The speakers will discuss the incompleteness of safeguards to prevent statelessness in all cases of deprivation or loss of nationality, and the use of deprivation of nationality for the purposes of safeguarding national security. The event will also discuss how to galvanise action at national and regional levels to ensure deprivation or loss of nationality does not result in statelessness in Europe.

The webinar and briefing are aimed at those working on statelessness and deprivation of nationality or related issues, such as nationality and migration, national security, anti-discrimination and minority rights, who would like to know more about the importance of legal and practical safeguards to prevent statelessness arising from deprivation of nationality measures, current practice in Europe, and what more needs to be done to protect every person’s right to a nationality.

ABOUT THE BRIEFING

This webinar will launch a thematic Statelessness Index briefing examining the relationship between deprivation of nationality and the prevention of statelessness. The briefing presents a state of play analysis of current law, policy, and practice on deprivation of nationality in Europe. It is co-authored by Dr Rachel Pougnet (University of Bristol) and the European Network on Statelessness (ENS), as part of the Economic and Social Research Council UK (ESRC) funded Knowledge Exchange Partnership addressing the tension between deprivation of nationality and Statelessness.

This briefing is the second in a series of thematic briefings developed by the European Network on Statelessness using data from its Statelessness Index, a comparative online tool that assesses European countries’ law, policy and practice on the protection of stateless people and the prevention and reduction of statelessness.

Using data from the Index, ENS’ first thematic briefing was released in May 2020 on Birth registration and the prevention of statelessness in Europe: identifying good practices and remaining barriers. The briefing examines data from 24 countries to identify good practice and barriers preventing children from having their birth registered.
