Spain accedes to the Convention on Reduction of Statelessness

News

This week some good news from Spain as it formally acceded to the 1961 UN Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness. At an event hosted by the High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, during the 73rd UN General Assembly in New York this week, Spain’s Minister for External Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, Josep Borrell, formally deposited the country’s instrument of accession to the convention. Not only that, but Mr Borrell used his speech to UNHCR and gathered State representatives to call for greater solidarity and responsibility in Europe’s response to the ‘drama’ facing refugees, promising to push for a ‘more generous’ approach by the EU. Let’s hope the positive words are put into action!
