Watch our Director Chris Nash intervene at the UNHCR High-Level Global Refugee Forum Progress Review in Geneva this week – calling on States to take action to end statelessness and urging the outgoing UNHCR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi to prominently highlight the issue in his handover to the new High Commissioner elect Barham Salih who will start in post next month.

The Global Refugee Forum Progress Review took place from 15-17 December 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland. It was attended by over 1500 representatives from over 150 countries, including governments, regional institutions, UN agencies, private organisations, civil society and impacted persons.

The event was intended to build on stocktaking efforts at the country, regional, and global levels, to maintain momentum and assess progress against the implementation of the pledges made at the Global Refugee Forum (GRF) towards the advancement of the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR) and also outline next steps in the lead up to the GRF in 2027.

At ENS, we have been engaging with the GRF from the outset, trying to move the needle on global efforts to end statelessness, including through encouraging more governments to make pledges. At a time of dwindling resources, when civic space is shrinking, and the international refugee framework is under constant pressure, we were proud to join over 20 organisations – many led by or including people with lived experience of statelessness – in raising awareness and advocating on statelessness over the three days through interventions, high-level meetings, events and networking opportunities.
